What Is Shin-Osaka Station

Shin-Osaka Station main concourse displaying directional signs for Shinkansen platforms and station facilities for travelers
Shin-Osaka Station serves as the Shinkansen gateway to Osaka and western Japan.
Many travelers get confused because Osaka has two major stations with similar names. Shin-Osaka Station handles all Shinkansen services, while the main Osaka Station does not have Shinkansen platforms.
The station connects two major Shinkansen lines: the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Sanyo Shinkansen. It offers connections to conventional JR lines and the Osaka Metro. Despite its size, the station layout is simpler than Osaka Station’s complex structure.

Two major Shinkansen lines serve Shin-Osaka Station:
- Tokaido Shinkansen (eastbound): to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nagoya

At the station, tickets are available from the JR Ticket Office or ticket machines. During busy periods, waiting times may be longer, and some trains may be fully booked, so arriving with extra time is advisable.
Another option is booking online in advance. When you book through Japan Bullet Train, your seat is secured before your trip. Multilingual staff based in Japan are available by phone or through an online contact form if assistance is needed.

Using the JR Pass
The JR Pass is valid at Shin-Osaka Station on Hikari, Kodama, and Sakura Shinkansen services. Nozomi and Mizuho trains are not covered and require an additional supplement ticket.
