Step-by-Step: Shinkansen Boarding from the Midosuji Line

Many travelers come to Shin-Osaka Station from different parts of Osaka using the Midosuji Line. Follow these five steps to board the Shinkansen smoothly.

Step 1 – Exit Through the Midosuji Line

When you arrive at Shin-Osaka Station on the Midosuji Line, walk toward the middle of the platform first.

Take the escalator down to the concourse level.

You will see the Central Gate.

Exit through the Central Gate. This gate leads directly to the Shinkansen area.

Step 2 – Go to the Shinkansen Central Gate

After you exit the Midosuji Central Gate, walk straight ahead.

You will see a yellow sign that says "Exit 5" (出口⑤号) on your right. Keep this sign on your right and continue straight.

Head toward the corridor on the right side of Nippon Travel (日本旅行).

At the end of the corridor, you will see an escalator on your left diagonal.

Take this escalator up to the 3rd floor of the JR station area.

When you reach the JR station area, look to your left. You will see the Shinkansen Central Gate (新幹線のりば 中央口).

Step 3 – Buy or Receive Your Shinkansen Ticket

Before entering the Shinkansen area, you need a valid ticket. You have two main options:

  • If you already have a ticket: Great! You can go directly to the Shinkansen gates.
  • If you need to get your ticket: Look for the ticket machines. These machines have multilanguage options and accept cash or cards.

Step 4 – Enter the Shinkansen Gate

Note: Shin-Osaka Station's Shinkansen concourse is very large. It can take some time to reach your platform after passing through the gates, so please allow yourself plenty of time.

If you have two paper tickets, put both tickets together in the slot. The gate will return the tickets at the other end. If you have an IC card, just tap it on the reader.

After passing the gate, look at the large display board. Find your train name and departure time. The board shows the platform number on the right side.

The display switches between Japanese and English every few seconds. Wait for the English display if needed.

Step 5 – Find Your Car and Line Up

Arrive at the 4th-floor platform about 10 to 15 minutes before departure.

Before you go up, check the sign near the escalator. It shows which car numbers are nearby after you go up. Choose the escalator closest to your car number. This saves walking time on the platform.

Take the escalator or stairs to the 4th floor.

When you reach the platform, find your car number and wait there.Stand behind the yellow safety line. This line keeps you safe from the edge.

Wait until the train arrives. The doors will open exactly where you are standing. Board the train and find your seat.

Other Routes to the Shinkansen

Not everyone comes from Midosuji Line. Here are two other common routes.

From JR Local Lines

If you arrive by JR Kyoto Line or Limited Express Haruka, look for signs that say "Shinkansen" or "新幹線" in Japanese.

Do not exit through the regular gates. Go straight to the Shinkansen Transfer Gate instead.

Use the Transfer Gate to go directly to the Shinkansen area. This takes you straight to the 3rd floor Shinkansen concourse.

From Outside

If you come by taxi or from a nearby hotel, use one of the station entrances on the 3rd floor. Tell your taxi driver, “Shinkansen entrance.”

If you enter from ground level, look for elevators or escalators to go up to the 3rd floor.

If You Arrive Early at Shin-Osaka Station

The 3rd floor concourse has a waiting room where you can sit and rest.

The 4th floor platforms also have benches. However, the 3rd floor is more comfortable for longer waits.

Shops Near the Shinkansen Gates

There are many shops near the Shin-Osaka Shinkansen gates. Some shops are outside the gates, and some are inside the gates.

Outside the gates, there is Ekimarche Shin-Osaka. You can buy ekiben (boxed train meals), snacks, drinks, and souvenirs here. The largest shop is Entrée Marché. It offers many kinds of ekiben and local specialties.

There are also several restaurants and cafés in this area. You can sit down and enjoy a full meal before your train. This is a good choice if you have extra time before departure.
