Facilities
Free Wi-Fi service is accessible within the Shinkansen. Cars offering this service are marked with stickers indicating its availability. Please note that internet connections may have temporary interruptions when passing through certain areas, such as tunnels.
The power supply for the outlets on the Shinkansen is AC100V, 2A, 60Hz. In ordinary cars, outlets are often located near the windows or at the foot of the seats, while in Green-Cars, they are commonly positioned in front of the armrests in the middle of the seats. However, there is also the possibility that some cars do not have power outlets. No special procedures are required when using the outlets for mobile chargers. If they are available, feel free to use them.
Restrooms are available in each Shinkansen. The number and locations of restrooms may vary depending on the carriage.
In many trains, smoking is prohibited. However, some trains may have smoking rooms.
Shinkansen trains are equipped with “multi-purpose rooms / 多目的室”. These rooms are private spaces primarily reserved for individuals with physical disabilities or mobility challenges. However, when not in use by passengers with disabilities, these rooms may also be utilized for purposes such as breastfeeding, changing room, or accommodating passengers with health issues. Multi-purpose rooms are typically available in all Shinkansen train. However, on other trains, there may be no multi-purpose rooms. Multi-purpose rooms are usually locked and cannot be accessed without permission. If you wish to use one, you may request the train conductor to unlock it for you.
